It is a bit chilling, but I suspect (hope?) the President is well aware of the spectre of Vietnam. The drawdown in Iraq is pretty well irreversible at this point, and the surge in Afghanistan is bound to be temporary, just enough to set conditions for an exit. He does after all, want to get reelected I am sure.
