"Good night, and Good Luck"

We just saw "Good Night, and Good Luck," which does a good job of showing the democratic tradition of standing up to those who erode our freedoms while claiming to defend them. It is sobering to realize that as scary as McCarthy was, he was only a Senator. Today it is the Vice President who is working to keep torture legal. These policies aid our enemies, and damage the morale of our men and women in uniform, by undermining the very ideals that they are sworn to uphold. In this, Cheney was joined by just nine Senators (the hall of shame is Allard (R-CO), Bond (R-MO), Coburn (R-OK), Cochran (R-MS), Cornyn (R-TX), Inhofe (R-OK), Roberts (R-KS), Sessions (R-AL) and Stevens (R-AK)). However, it is reassuring to see the Vice President losing support for his position, and a bit of a speech by Eisenhower, shown very near the end of the movie, is inspirational and relevant today in that it talks about the ability of Americans to speak out freely against those with power. (If anyone can point me to a transcript of that speech I'd be interested in seeing it.) This movie is effective in that it uses the words of a previous generation to give us insight and inspiration as we face similar issues today.
